STEPHEN L. HINTSALA

Stephen L. Hintsala, 76, of Black River, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at The Lighthouse at Ishpeming Health & Rehabilitation Center. 

Stephen was born on December 31, 1943 in Ishpeming to the late Jarl and Bertha (Linna) Hintsala.  He was a 1961 graduate of Republic High School and a lifelong Black River resident.

Stephen served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 until 1965.  He drove trucks at the Republic mine and retired as an electrician from the Tilden Mine after 36 years.

Stephen married the former Joanne Wakkuri on November 15, 1969. 

Stephen was a member of the American Legion and N.R.A.  He enjoyed duck and goose hunting and was an avid Packers fan.  He liked music, playing the guitar, listening to N.P.R. and enjoyed kicking everyone’s butt at Jeopardy.  He was a quiet and generous man.

Stephen is survived by his sister, Elaine; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Tom; grandsons, Tommy, Jarl and Johnny; special nephew, Randy; as well as many other numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  Besides his parents, Stephen was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Joanne; brothers, William and Stanley; and sister, Evelyn.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
