Karen S. MacLachlan, 68, of Champion, passed away Thursday morning, July 9, 2020 at her beloved home on Lake Michigamme surrounded by loved ones after a short and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Karen was born on September 22, 1951 in West Branch, MI to Robert E. and Pauline A. (Rising) Cook. She was a 1969 graduate of Houghton Lake High School. Karen received a degree in nursing from Delta College in Bay City, MI and received her Master’s Degree in Nursing Management from Northern Michigan University in 1995.
She worked in the Bay City area before moving to Marquette in 1978 where she was employed by Marquette General Hospital. Karen worked there as a nurse manager until 1992 when she became Assistant Administrator of Ancillary Services and the Heart Institute, eventually becoming Assistant Administrator for Patient Services. She retired from Marquette General in 2008. In 2008 and until 2013 she took up a second career at UP Home Health and Hospice as Director of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement. She also volunteered at UPAWS and was an enthusiastic Big Sister of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Marquette County.
In her free time, Karen loved the outdoors, especially biking, hiking, snow shoeing and skiing, as well as pickle ball and stamping/card making. She and her late husband, Michael, received much enjoyment spending time at their home on Lake Michigamme.
Survivors include her mother Pauline Cook of Prudenville, MI; daughter, Christa Cook of Edwardsville, IL; grandson, Anthony Chiaurro and her sister, Brenda (Jim) Finch of New York. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Cook, and her husband, Michael MacLachlan on November 9, 2019.
At Karen’s request, no public services will be held.
