John (Jack) Henry Tregoning departed on eternal patrol on November 22, 2020 at 1430 hours.
He was born on September 4, 1938 in Ishpeming, MI to John B. and Aurora M. (Swanson) Tregoning and was raised in Negaunee, MI. He attended school in Negaunee and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17. Jack trained as an engineman and served in the submarine force on the boats Bream, Bluegill, Swordfish, Perch, Menhaden, and Cutlass. He served a tour in Vietnam on the patrol gunboat PG90. He retired from the Navy as a senior chief engineman in 1975.
Jack married his wife Barbara on November 17, 1967 in Comstock, MI, and they had two children. In civilian life, he was employed by Consolidated Foods Corp. in Waukegan, IL as a refrigeration/boiler foreman and facilities supervisor. He returned to the UP after his retirement from Consolidated Foods in 1983. In retirement, he enjoyed reading, hunting, keeping in touch with his military buddies, and regaling people with stories from his misspent youth. He was a lifelong member of the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, United States Submarine Veterans, Fleet Reserve Branch 53, and the Holland Club of Submarine Veterans.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Pat (Tregoning) Brown, and his wife Barbara J. (Moody) Tregoning.
He is survived by his brother Phillip (April) Barry, his sister Louise (Larry) Kytasaari, his son John F. (Gretchen) Tregoning of Columbus, IN, his daughter Mary E. (Heather) Tregoning of San Diego, CA, and his three grandchildren John D. Tregoning, Cora L. Tregoning, and Aurora M. Lang-Tregoning.
In honor of Jack’s wishes, there will be no services, and his remains will be buried at sea by the U.S. Navy.
