Nancy Jean Haanpaa, 72, of Negaunee, formerly of Herman, died Friday morning, October 26, 2018 at Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee while under the care of UP Home Health & Hospice.
She was born September 13, 1946 in L’Anse, a daughter of the late Homer and Frances (Ellenich) Salo. She was raised in L’Anse, attended L’Anse High School and was a graduate of the former Suomi College.
Nancy worked a variety of jobs throughout the years. Her most important job was being a mom and grandmother. She loved to spend time with her family and friends. Her many interests included gardening, baking, sewing, quilting and arts & crafts.
She is survived by four children, David (Nancy) Haanpaa of L’Anse, Roddy Haanpaa of L'Anse, Tracy (Rich) LaPlante of Negaunee, and Bill (Danielle) Haanpaa of Negaunee; grandchildren, Kristen, Heather, Jenna, Brian, Kenny, Jacob, Shelby, Alec, Emilee and Hunter; seven great-grandchildren and one on the way; siblings, Mike (Sue) Salo of Florida, Arlene (Jim) Kemppainen of L’Anse and Lynn (Bruce) Sprangers of Wisconsin; her mother’s second husband, Don Skytta of Negaunee; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Shelley Bennett and son-in-law, Michael Bennett.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 4 pm at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. J. Albert Barchue officiating. Visitation will be held in the church for one hour prior to the service. A meal will follow in the annex of the church.
