HARRIET NOWELL Obituary

The fourth and last born child of Henry and Lillian (Lind) Oskierko, Harriet Nowell of Ishpeming and recently Negaunee passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, to be reunited with her husband of 53 years (Kenneth), her parents and three siblings, Edward Oskierko, Mary Jane Doubek and LaVerne Glassner, just shy of her 99th birthday.

Born February 22, 1924, Harriet attended Chicago schools, graduating from Bowen High in 1942.  She met and married Ken in 1951 in Chicago where he served in the 5th Army and then moved to Ishpeming following his discharge in 1952.  She loved her life in the UP and considered Ishpeming her little piece of Heaven.

She has been a proud and active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming for 60 years where she enjoyed Bible studies and being a member of Golden Link.  She volunteered for several years assembling Wesley’s famous pasties.  She was employed at the R.G. Williams Medical Clinic for 20 years, retiring in 1985.  Harriet found pleasure and satisfaction working with the public and being able to assist those in need.

Harriet and Ken were blessed beyond measure with the birth of their only child, Kim Eloise.  Kim married Paul Midthun of Minneapolis and they had grandsons, Ryan Midthun of Negaunee and Nowell (Audrey) Midthun of Charlotte, NC.  The boys were their pride and joy.  Harriet was then blessed with 5 great-grandchildren, Trevor Midthun of Ishpeming, Lydia and Norah Midthun of Waldorf, MD and Genevieve and Connor Midthun of Charlotte, NC.

Harriet is survived by her daughter, Kim and son-in-law, Paul who cared for her in their home for the last 14 months; grands and great-grands listed above; nieces, Linda and Tina Slager, Susan (Lloyd) Lasher, Lynn Glassner, Mary Jane Gill Drummond; nephews, Edward (Barbara) Oskierko and Rodney Gill; several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins also survive.

In addition to the loss of her husband, parents and 3 siblings, she was preceded in death by her in-laws, Mary Elizabeth Matthews and Reginald Nowell, Albert Slager, Irwin Doubek, James Glassner, Marjorie Gill Bearden and nephews, Kenneth Gill and Roy Glassner.

Honoring Harriet’s wishes, there will be no services at this time.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church, UPAWS, Tunnel to Towers or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
